Buying a new air conditioning system is one of the largest home investments you will make. Done right, it keeps your family comfortable for 15+ years and lowers your energy bills.
Understand SEER Ratings
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how efficiently a unit converts electricity into cooling over an entire season. The higher the SEER, the less it costs to operate.
As of 2023, the minimum SEER in the South is 15. High-efficiency units reach 18-26 SEER. A 20 SEER unit uses roughly 25% less electricity than a 15 SEER unit of the same capacity.
Size Matters More Than You Think
Bigger is not better with air conditioning. An oversized unit short-cycles, does not remove humidity effectively, wears out faster, and costs more upfront. An undersized unit runs constantly and cannot keep up on the hottest days.
Proper sizing requires a Manual J load calculation — a detailed analysis of your home's square footage, insulation, windows, and local climate.
Single-Stage vs. Two-Stage vs. Variable-Speed
Single-Stage
Runs at full capacity or not at all. Most affordable upfront. Common in entry-level systems.
Two-Stage
Runs at low capacity most of the time and full capacity only on the hottest days. Better humidity control and lower energy use.
Variable-Speed
Modulates continuously between 40-100% capacity. Most efficient, best humidity control, most comfortable. Worth it in Oklahoma's extreme summer heat if you plan to stay in the home long-term.
Heat Pump vs. Traditional AC
A heat pump functions as an AC in summer and a heating source in winter. In Oklahoma, where winters get cold, most homeowners pair a heat pump with a gas furnace — called a dual-fuel system.
